Mick Jagger Health Issue Prompts Rolling Stones to Postpone Tour

The Stones said tickets will be valid for rescheduled dates, which it plans to announce shortly

The Rolling Stones have postponed their coming North American tour so that Mick Jagger can receive medical treatment for an unspecified health issue. The band announced on Saturday that Mr. Jagger, the 75-year-old frontman, “has been advised by doctors that he cannot go on tour at this time as he needs medical treatment. The doctors have advised Mick that he is expected to make a complete recovery so that he can get back on stage as soon as possible.” Ticket holders should “hold onto their existing tickets as they will be valid for the rescheduled dates,” the band said in a news release. The band wrote on Twitter that rescheduled dates “will be announced shortly.”
The North American leg of the band’s “No Filter” tour had been scheduled to kick off April 20 in Miami Gardens, Fla., including a show at the New Orleans Jazz Festival on May 2. The release didn’t specify Mr. Jagger’s health issue. A publicist said no further information was available. “I’m so sorry to all our fans in America & Canada with tickets. I really hate letting you down like this. I’m devastated for having to postpone the tour but I will be working very hard to be back on stage as soon as I can. Once again, huge apologies to everyone,” Mr. Jagger wrote on Twitter.
Despite the band members’ ages—guitarist Keith Richards and drummer Charlie Watts are in their 70s, and the Rolling Stones have been touring for more than 50 years—the postponement comes as a surprise. The band had just begun rehearsing, judging from a Twitter post three days ago (“All set up for tour rehearsals!”). Mr. Richards on Friday released a reissue of his 1988 solo debut album. Next month, the Rolling Stones are set to issue a new best-of compilation album, which had presumably been timed for the tour. The Rolling Stones remain a juggernaut of the live-music industry: Last year, the band grossed $116.6 million from just 14 shows, making them the 10th highest-grossing act world-wide, according to concert trade publication Pollstar. The No. 1 act, Ed Sheeran, performed 94 shows. The Rolling Stones’ last “No Filter” show was in Poland last July. In November, Mr. Jagger told The Wall Street Journal that he now prefers brief tours to “these very long, arduous, never-ending tours where you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
